In which I am thwarted by dusty books.

I think I'm having an allergic reaction to the book I'm reading.

No, seriously. I got it from a used book store and it's dusty and looks slightly icky and if the microwave still worked I would've considered putting it in to kill germs and stuff, but it isn't so I can't, so now I am stuck reading a slightly icky looking book. I started sneezing the moment I started reading it -- you would've thought that the dust of centuries were upon it.

Now I have a sore throat and an itchy nose.

Dangerous hobby, reading. Who knew.




(For the curious, the book is Caprice and Rondo by Dorothy Dunnett, in which I spend a lot of time feeling like I'd like to throttle the main character, despite him being fascinating and clever and all. I have been doing this for six books, people! Someone should come join me.)

Well, I've had a hard time convincing people to try and read Dunnett -- the books are rather difficult, but it's worth the effort.

I remember discussing books with you once, but I forgot already what books you liked, whoops. ^^;

But since I've no chance of getting it, it won't be anytime soon. ^^
I might go to Kota Kinabalu sometime around this weekend, so I'm thinking of getting some books to read at Popular there

I hope the Popular in KK is better than the one we used to go to in Penang -- that one sold mostly school reference books, you barely saw any fiction on the shelves. Hopefully you'll find something you like!

Real-life, like a biography? I don't read much non-fiction, unfortunately, so I'm no good at recommending them. Any topic in particular you're interested in? I can ask around and see if others have any recs.

Ah, sort of general fiction/literature books, I guess? Still not my forte; I tend to read more science fiction and fantasy. And some historical fiction.

Maybe Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, about a boy who lost his father in the 9/11 tragedy? My sister likes Zadie Smith's books, but I haven't read any of her books.

I read more fantasy than SF, actually. The problem with fantasy books is you start reading one book and you end up having to read three. Or seven. Or, heaven forbid, twelve books!

If you don't mind fantasy series that are still going on, I liked Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind, and Scott Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora and Naomi Novik's Temeraire books.
